Austin,TX : Driver indicted for fatal New Year’s Day crash on December, Thursday 7th 2017

Lorena Renee Hernandez, 20, was indicted by the Hays County Grand Jury in November. One person died and three were seriously injured in an early-morning crash at the intersection of Staples Road (FM 621) and County Road 266 (Old Bastrop Highway) on Jan. 1, 2015.

Killed in the crash, that occurred on a curve that has proven dangerous in the past, was 29-year-old Ruben Trevino Jr. of San Marcos. Hernandez, who was 17 at the time, was injured, as was a 16-year-old and a 28-yearold.

The crash left a wide debris field and some of the occupants of the Volkswagen Jetta, which had rolled several times, were thrown some distance from the car. Texas Highway Patrol troopers who responded to the scene said it was unclear who had been where in the car, but that no one had been wearing a seat belt.

It was initially believed that Trevino had been at the wheel; however, it was later determined that the drivers seat had been moved too far up for him to have been comfortable.

Intoxication manslaughter is a second degree felony and intoxication assault is a third degree felony.

That intersection was the scene of another fatality that had occurred less than a month before. A one-vehicle accident on Dec. 7 of 2014 killed a 28-year-old Maxwell man.
