Pilot Mountain, NC : Alcohol involved in fatal ATV wreck in Surry County, April 10, 2016

A local boy scout tried to help a woman killed in an alcohol-related ATV wreck Sunday in Pilot Mountain, contacting 911 and administering CPR until paramedics arrived.

John Shelton, Surry County EMS director, said authorities are working to contact the youth to commend him for his efforts.

Rose Wilson Dalton, 46, was thrown from the four-wheeler driven by her husband, Jonathan Lee Dalton, on Gilley Road near the entrance to the couple’s driveway.

Sgt. Kevin Barker, of State Highway Patrol, said Rose Dalton hit her head and was not wearing a helmet. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jonathan Dalton was charged with DWI, according to Barker.

“There’s more coming,” he said, adding that the incident is still under investigation and that the district attorney’s office will handle any additional charges.

Jonathan Dalton also did not wear a helmet and was not injured.

An autopsy will be performed on Rose Dalton at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center because charges were filed in the accident, Shelton said.

The EMS director commented on the risks inherent to ATV’s.

“They are dangerous to operate,” Shelton said. “You absolutely have to have the proper equipment and apparel. You absolutely shouldn’t be operating a vehicle under the influence.”
