BAKERSFIELD, VT : Car show honoring teen killed in ATV crash on Saturday September 3 2016
The Bakersfield and Enosburgh communities gathered Saturday to honor a 15-year-old boy who passed away last summer with a car show.
Enosburg native Dawson Perley was just 15 years old when he passed away after getting in an accident on an ATV in June of 2015. One year later, family and friends say his memory lives on.
"He was very friendly. He got along with everyone. He loved just being active, playing basketball and soccer," said Tricia Wright, Perley's cousin.
On Saturday, the community gathered for the 2nd annual Dawson Perley Memorial Car Show at the Westcoms Snack Bar in Bakersfield. Family members say Perley loved cars, and they started the event last summer in his honor.
"We were actually having dinner at the snack bar down here, and we were talking to the owners about it, and they said they'd like to have a car show over here, and we thought we'd put on a car show and give all the proceeds to his scholarship in his memory," Dakota Gagne, Event Coordinator.
More than 60 cars showed up for that first show, and two students were awarded $500 college scholarships with the funds raised. Within the first hour of this year's show, more than 40 cars were set up and many more continued arrive.
"It's a 1941 Chevrolet Super Deluxe. The car came up out of Rhode Island originally. I picked it up this year after somebody worked on it quite a bit," said Mike Lussier, from St. Albans.
Everything from classics, to muscle cars, and new models showed up. One special car that was placed on display belonged to Perley's father who recently passed away. The event also featured a corn hole tournament, live music, and a silent auction.
"He was, what people would call, a good friend to everybody. He was an athlete. He was involved in the community. He was really into the Fast and the Furious movies, so we thought the car show would be a really good idea to honor him that way," said Taylor Magoon, cousin.
Organizers hope to expand the event and keep it going as an annual tradition.
"Just hope to keep growing and keep doing this every year and just keep expanding and getting more cars and getting more money to give to the scholarship so more kids can go to college," said Gagne.
