Columbia, SC : Gaffney man dies in motorcycle crash on West Floyd Baker Boulevard on Friday, 28th September 2018

A Gaffney man was killed Friday in a motorcycle crash on West Floyd Baker Boulevard.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the deceased as David. S. Engwiller, 20, of 719 West Smith St.

According to Fowler, Engwiller was driving a 1994 Honda CBR 600 motorcycle eastbound on West Floyd Baker Boulevard at 10:10 a.m. A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop Engwiller for not having a license plate on his motorcycle, at which time Engwiller sped away.

The trooper turned his blue lights off and did not pursue Engwiller, according to Fowler. Engwiller continued to drive away at a high rate of speed and lost control of his motorcycle in the 300 block of West Floyd Baker Blvd., crashing into the back wall of a brick garage.

Fowler stated Engwiller was wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted, Fowler said.
