One person died following a two-vehicle crash on Thursday night, according to state police.
Pennsylvania State Police said Kenneth Vernon Heath, 56, of Coatesville, died in the crash on Buck Run Road at Strasburg Road in East Fallowfield Township. State police responded shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, according to investigating officer Trooper Kelly MacIntyre.
State police said in a news release that Heath was traveling south on Buck Run Road when a second driver stopped at the intersection. Heath reportedly attempted to pass that vehicle on the left, struck it and then hit a utility pole, police said. The other driver, a 21-year-old from Coatesville, sustained minor injuries from the crash, according to state police. Heath succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The drivers were the sole occupants in their vehicle.
South Coatesville Police Chief Kevin Pierce said that a borough officer attempted to stop a blue Jeep SUV for a traffic violation at Modena Road and South First Avenue in South Coatesville Borough on Thursday night. At the time of the violation, the driver had turned south onto South First Avenue.
“The vehicle initially began to pull over for our officer in the area of Newlinville Road in South Coatesville Borough, but then fled as our officer’s patrol vehicle approached. The vehicle fled south onto Youngsburg Road toward Buck Run Road in East Fallowfield Township,” Pierce said. “Our officer lost sight of the vehicle and radioed that he was discontinuing the pursuit.”
Pierce said that the police officer continued in the general direction the Jeep was traveling. The crash, involving the jeep driven by Heath, occurred at the intersection of Buck Run Road and Strasburg Road in East Fallowfield Township. Pierce confirmed the driver sustained a serious injury and subsequently died in the ambulance prior to being transported.
State police said the crash remains under investigation, including whether controlled substances were a contributing factor in the crash.
