NEWBURYPORT, MA : Port police search for truck after Market Square crash on Thursday, 22nd August 2019
Newburyport, Massachusetts
Local police spent part of Thursday afternoon looking for the driver of a white pickup truck that, according to several witnesses, jumped the curb in Market Square and knocked over a lamppost and a planter.
The truck, hauling a silver or black trailer, was driving around the Bullnose toward State Street when the truck and trailer left the road about 11:30 a.m.
Shortly after the incident, local police sent a “be-on-the-lookout” alert via radio to area police departments and said the truck, which had heavy front-end damage, was heading south on Route 1 toward Rowley.
“It sounded like a bomb went off,” said Shelby Hawkes of Rowley.
Hawkes and her two children were in the Bullnose at the time of accident and said she filmed the hit-and-run on her phone as she was videotaping her children playing. A Newburyport police officer interviewed Hawkes and asked her to send the video to the station.
The truck didn’t come close to striking anyone in the Bullnose, Hawkes added.
