Merrimack , NH: Bus driver is facing charges after her bus rolled backwards into a building after she let her 5-year-old sit in the driver's seat on Thursday , January 8th 2015
A Merrimack bus driver is facing charges after her bus rolled backwards into a building after she let her 5-year-old sit in the driver's seat, police said.
Merrimack police said Tiffanie Brown was performing a routine safety check on the school bus Thursday at the London Court apartment complex. Police said she had her 8- and 5-year-old sons with her, and she let the younger boy sit in the driver's seat with the bus running.
Police said the boy somehow put the bus in reverse, and the vehicle went backwards, sideswiping cars and hitting a carport.
The 8-year-old was hanging onto a door at the time, police said.
"It's alarming, disturbing and alarming," said Capt. Peter Albert. "You would hope people would use more common sense than that, at the very least."
No one was hurt.
A camera mounted inside the bus tells the story.
"That shows that the bus driver was in fact out of the bus going through the check of the buses lights," Albert said. "Her 5-year-old actually seated in the seat as she instructed him to activate the different lights to check them."
News 9 has learned that Brown works for Provider, Inc. There is no word on her employment status following the incident.
