MENLO PARK, CA : Double DUI, five-car crash on northbound Highway 101 in Menlo Park on Sunday, 11th August 2019

Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries following a chaotic five-car crash involving two suspected DUI drivers on northbound Highway 101 in Menlo Park early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A man and a woman who both were suspected of driving under the influence were arrested, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

The CHP received a call about the crash, which happened on northbound 101 just north of Marsh Road, around 2:35 a.m., Montiel said.

A gray 2006 Honda Civic with four people inside was driving at an unknown speed when it lost control, veered left into water-filled attenuators within the center divide and rolled over on the highway, coming to rest in northbound lanes.

Moments later, just after its occupants managed to get out, the Honda was struck by a white 2018 BMW, Montiel said.

A white Honda Civic then stopped just short of colliding with the first two cars, only to be rear-ended on the right side by a black Jeep, Montiel said. That Honda managed to drive away, exiting at Woodside Road to wait for officers. Finally, a red Dodge Dart hit the Jeep.

The man driving the gray Honda Civic, identified as Ricardo Hernandez, 20, of Redwood City, and the woman driving the black Jeep, identified as Maria Guzman, 18, of East Palo Alto, were both suspected of driving under the influence. They were both taken to San Mateo County Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, and were then arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail, Montiel said.
