Topeka, KS : Woman, 2 small children avoid serious injury after rollover crash caused by deer on Friday morning, February 10, 2017
A woman and two children escaped serious injury Friday morning after their vehicle crashed south of Topeka, authorities said.
Shawnee County sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer said Nicole Potter, 24, of Carbondale, was southbound shortly before 9:25 a.m. in the 10800 block of S.E. California when she lost control of her Toyota 4-runner. The vehicle entered a ditch, then crashed through a barbed-wire fence before rolling and striking a tree in a field, he said.
Steve Uhl, owner of the property where Potter crashed, said his brother, who lives nearby, was driving south on S.E. California when he came upon the crash.
The woman “was going up the road screaming for help when my brother happened to be going down the road,” Uhl said.
Uhl said his brother stayed with Potter and helped get her husband and first responders to the scene.
Stallbaumer said Potter was ejected from the vehicle and was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening. Uhl said he understood she had broken an arm and lost some teeth in the crash.
The two children, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, were properly restrained and weren’t injured, Stallbaumer said.
Uhl said Potter lost control of her vehicle while trying to avoid a deer in the road.
