Billings, MT : One woman dead and six other people injured after an SUV veered off Highway 59 and plunged into a ravine near Miles City on Tuesday afternoon, March 1, 2016
One woman is dead and six other people are hospitalized after an SUV went off the highway and into a ravine south of Miles City.
The incident overwhelmed the local EMS system, Miles City Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Branden Stevens said in a release. At 3:16 p.m., rescuers responded to the crash near Highway 59, south of Miles City.
The SUV carried four adults and four children, said Trooper Brandon Kelm with Montana Highway Patrol. An adult woman was ejected in the crash and declared dead at the scene.
He said that it appeared that the SUV went off of the road on one side, the driver overcorrected and the vehicle rolled into a deep ravine. A large response included multiple agencies, and rescuers used ropes to access and pull people from the wreck.
According to Stevens, one person was immediately flown to a Billings hospital via helicopter. Three others were moved to Billings hospitals after first being taken to Miles City. The others were taken to Holy Rosary Hospital. In total, six were hospitalized.
A number of agencies assisted on the call, including Rosebud County Ambulance, Power River County Ambulance, Fallon County Ambulance, Custer County Volunteer Fire Department, Broadus Fire Department, Baker Fire Department, Custer County Sheriff's Office, Montana Highway Patrol, Montana Department of Transportation and HELP Flight helicopter.
