Police have arrested a man on suspicion of driving under the influence and a hit-and-run crash that left six people injured and the road temporarily closed on Byron Highway Friday night.

East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters, along with California Highway Patrol officers and other personnel, arrived at Byron Highway near Highway 4 at 11:03 p.m. Friday night at the scene of a two-car crash.

Six victims were injured in the crash, including three children, with injuries ranging from minor to major, according to fire district officials. Two of the children sustained major injuries, including fractured bones, and were transported by helicopter to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland. The other child passenger sustained minor abrasions and was transported to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland by ambulance. The parents of the children sustained major injuries, which also included broken bones, and were transported by ambulance to John Muir Walnut Creek.

According to police, the suspect was traveling north on Byron Highway at a high rate of speed. His unsafe turn caused his Audi to collide into the rear of the Ford Explorer that the family was traveling in, which caused the Ford to collide into a tree. After the Audi was forced to stop due to damage, the driver fled the scene on foot.

The suspect has been booked into Martinez County Jail on felony charges of hit-and-run and felony charges of DUI, according to police.

Police and fire officials did not disclose the identity of the suspect or victims or the status of their injuries as of Saturday afternoon.
