Woonsocket, RI : 22-year-old mother killed in a car crash, baby's dad charged with DUI in Woonsocket early Tuesday morning, December 8, 2015
Family and friends surrounded a growing memorial in Woonsocket where a 22-year-old mother was killed in a car accident early Tuesday morning.
The driver, who is the father of the woman's 4-month-old baby, is charged with driving drunk. The family of the Woonsocket mother, Alexandra Patten, tells ABC6 News the two were fighting when the car crashed into a telephone pole on Mendon Road.
"It hurts to my soul. I am empty and I am asking for help from something greater than me," says Patten's grandmother, Muriel Grady.
Patten's baby is just fourth months old, and the father, 23-year-old Johnny Sak, is charged with the young mother's death, accused of driving drunk.
"He robbed me and all of us that love her. He took something so precious," Grady cries, saying she wants to see Sak behind bars.
Grady tells ABC6 News that she still can't wrap her head around what she was told about the moments leading up to the accident.
"I found out that he had slapped her. They were arguing when the accident occurred, and she was crying," says Grady. "I believe now that he murdered my granddaughter."
A vigil was created at the site of the crash Tuesday night, as friends of Patten gathered together, consoling one another, trying to deal with the overwhelming loss.
As family continues to make sense of what happened, Grady says she can't believe her great granddaughter will never get to know her mom.
"She'll never hear her mother's voice. I can tell her about her. My granddaughter won't see her walk for the first time, she won't see her go to school," says Grady.
Sak and the three additional passengers were also hurt in the crash, but none of their injuries are said to be life-threatening.
Police say the 4-month-old baby is with family.
