Terre Haute, IN : One injured in I-70 semi collision in Clay County on Wednesday, August 3, 2016

A man was injured in a two-semi collision that snarled traffic on Interstate 70 in Clay County for several hours today.

The accident was reported just before 3:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the 21.7 mile marker, less than a mile west of Indiana 59.

A white 2000 Freightliner pulling a box trailer loaded with auto parts and driven by Harpit Atwal, 43, Brampton, Ontario, failed to slow and rear-ended a 2005 Freightliner tractor driven by Robert L. Cooper, 59, Mooresville, according to Indiana State Police.

Traffic was slow or stopped approaching a construction zone, police said. Both vehicles traveled into the median and blocked part of the eastbound passing lane.

Cooper was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment of neck and back pain, police said.

Atwal refused medical treatment at the scene, and was cited for speed too fast to avoid a collision, according to police.

Full and partial lane closures occurred as emergency workers cleared the scene, but all lanes were re-opened just after 7 p.m., police said.

Clay County sheriff's deputies, Posey Township Fire/Rescue, Jackson Township Fire/Rescue, CARE EMS and Edington Wrecker Service assisted at the scene.
