A man was killed in a traffic crash near Orient early Wednesday morning, Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones said Wednesday in a news release.

Officials have tentatively identified the body as Robert E. Mandrell, 41, of Orient.

Deputies responded to the reported crash at about 2:29 a.m. Wednesday on East Franklin Street near Orient. When they arrived on the scene, they saw that the victim’s pickup truck was fully engulfed in flames.

The West Frankfort Fire Department extinguished the fire, and a badly burned body was found in the driver’s seat.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor. It appears that the driver veered off the road and struck a tree.

The investigation is ongoing. The Franklin County Coroner was scheduled to perform an autopsy on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.
