BRACEVILLE, OH : Utah man killed in crash on I-80 on Friday, October, 20th 2017
A man from Utah was killed Friday afternoon when the tractor trailer he was driving crashed into the tractor trailer in front of him on Interstate 80, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Mathew W. Bishop, 51, of Springville, Utah, was transporting three conversion vans on the flatbed at the time of the crash, which occurred around 1 p.m. He died at the scene, according to the patrol.
The crash backed traffic up for hours in the westbound lane, just west of the state Route 5 exit, until the scene was cleared around 5:40 p.m.
Bishop’s Volvo truck was heavily damaged and a HazMat crew was called to the scene to clean up a large fuel spill, according to a call summary from the Trumbull County 911 Center.
Eugene Bell, 67, of Cleveland, was driving a tractor trailer when an unidentified tractor trailer pulled into the road from the right side at a slow speed, causing Bell to brake abruptly, according to the patrol.
Bishop’s truck hit the back of Bell’s truck.
One of the people involved in the crash was removed from a vehicle with extraction equipment, according to the 911 center.
Metal and glass were spread across the three-lane turnpike as law enforcement and emergency medical personnel worked the scene near mile marker 207.
The Hiram branch of the patrol is investigating. Braceville Fire Department, the Newton Falls Fire Department, Med Star Ambulance, Interstate Towing and Ohio Turnpike Maintenance assisted at the scene.
