RICHMOND, RI : Two Fitchburg men killed in Rhode Island crash on Saturday, February 4th 2017
Rhode Island State Police say it appears that two Fitchburg men who were killed in a rollover crash on Interstate 95 not far from the Connecticut state line Saturday night were not wearing their seat belts.
Sean McCarriston, 32, and Ryan Gromada, 23, both of 120 Lawrence St., Unit 2, Fitchburg, both died as a result of injuries suffered in a crash on Interstate 95 in Richmond Saturday about 9:30 p.m., according to a press release.
State police said a car driven by McCarriston appears to have been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended another vehicle.
The impact caused McCarriston's car to strike a high-speed barrier and then roll over several times, ejecting McCarriston and Gromada in the process, according to a press release.
"Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that neither man was wearing a seat belt," state police Capt. Matthew Moynihan said in a press release.
Gromada was pronounced dead at the scene, while McCarriston was taken to Kent County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said it does not appear that either drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Rhode Island State Police Forensic Unit.
The male driver of the other vehicle involved was taken to Westerly Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, according to state police. That driver's identity was not released.
