Authorities are investigating a collision involving a cement mixer truck and two other vehicles Thursday on the 73 Toll Road in Newport Coast that sent three people to hospitals.
The crash occurred about 8:40 a.m. when a gardening truck collided with a cement mixer on the southbound 73 near the Newport Coast Drive offramp, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.
The cement truck tipped over onto the Newport Coast Drive offramp and fell onto a vehicle, he said.
A 40-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. A 50-year-old man was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition, but he has since improved, Kurtz said.
Further information was not immediately available.
All lanes on the southbound 73 and the No. 1 lane on the northbound side were closed until about 2:30 p.m., according to Officer Denise Quesada of the California Highway Patrol.
