Gastonia, NC : Woman killed in wreck with tractor-trailer on Tuesday, September 5, 2017
The wreck occurred at 12:59 p.m. Tuesday at N.C. 273 and Caldwell Road, near the I-85 interchange.
The woman was headed south on N.C. 273, also known as Beatty Drive, when she collided head-on with a tractor-trailer truck headed north, said Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene.
“It was just a tragic situation that someone lost their life,” Roper said.
Police had trouble getting a positive ID on the woman because she was not the registered owner of the Buick sedan she was driving, Roper said. Police did not plan on releasing the deceased woman’s name until Wednesday morning because they wanted to make sure they had notified her nearest relatives.
Investigators, including members of the Highway Patrol, were still investigating what caused the wreck. A determination of the cause of the wreck may not be known until Thursday, Roper said.
“They’re still working on that, talking to witnesses,” Roper said.
Because of the wreck’s location it caused major backups until the scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m.
