Volusia County, FL : US Postal Service semi crashes on I-4 West in DeLand early Monday morning, March 21, 2016

A U.S. Postal Service semi-truck jackknifed and crashed on Interstate West in DeLand early Monday morning.

The crash happened at mile marker 121 at about 5 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a trooper was stopped on the shoulder of the roadway, trying to retrieve a large piece of tire off the highway, when the postal truck drove by and swerved to avoid hitting the tire.

FHP said the semi-truck jackknifed and crashed. The crash caused fuel to spill from the semi onto the westbound lanes, troopers said.

Investigators said the driver of the postal service truck, 73-year-old James Derry, suffered minor injuries.

Troopers said no mail was spilled or damaged.

The crash caused all lanes of westbound I-4 at State Road 44 to be closed for five hours along with the Interstate 95 off-ramps to I-4 and the U.S. 92 ramp to westbound I-4.

The roadways and ramps were all reopened at 10 a.m.
