Moorpark,CA: Oxnard man killed in crash on Highway 118 near Moorpark on September, Tuesday 26th 2017

An Oxnard man was killed in a collision Tuesday on Highway 118 near Moorpark, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash was reported about 2:50 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway just west of Grimes Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The other vehicle involved was a sedan, the patrol reported.

According to Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Stan Ziegler, there were initial reports of a head-on collision involving a semi.

Patrol Officer Marco Marin said it appears the semi was traveling east and the sedan was traveling west when for unknown reasons the sedan crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with the semi.

Marin said based on the "friction marks" on the roadway, the semi tried to stop.

"The patient was pronounced deceased on scene," Ziegler said.

Patrol officials said the driver of the sedan died and was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was described as a 56-year-old Oxnard man and was the only person in the vehicle, authorities said.

His name was being withheld while his family is notified.

The driver of the semi, the only occupant of that vehicle, was not injured but was assessed by firefighters as a precaution, Marin said.

The driver of the semi, a 48-year-old Van Nuys man, was not suspected of DUI, Marin said.

To determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor for the driver of the sedan, investigators will have to wait for the results of a toxicology exam, Marin said.

An investigator with the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office was also called to the scene, he said.

Both lanes of traffic were closed during the investigation but reopened about 5:30 p.m.
