TAUNTON, MA : Two hurt in back-to-back Route 24 crashes on Tuesday, August 8, 2017
Two drivers were hurt and three cars damaged Tuesday afternoon as result of back-to-back crashes on southbound Route 24 in Taunton.
Both crashes happened just south of Exit 12A, which leads to the Silver City Galleria mall.
The 911 call for the first one, according to state police, came in at 12:55 p.m.
Police say a 43-year-old Fall River woman was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, after she apparently lost control of her 2003 Mercury Mountaineer SUV.
Five minutes later, at 1 p.m., police said they received a report of two other vehicles having crashed at the same site.
“It was probably because of rubber-necking,” surmised Trooper Paul Sullivan, referring to drivers who take their eyes off the road while looking sideways at crashes and accidents.
Sullivan said a 28-year-old Raynham woman driving a 2004 Honda Accord was taken by ambulance to Morton Hospital.
The driver of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox involved in that same crash was described as a 33-year-old Westport man — who Sullivan said was not injured and was able to drive his damaged SUV from the scene.
Sullivan said a citation will be issued to the Fall River woman who caused the first crash. He added that both incidents remain under investigation.
Sullivan said police cleared the scene at 1:50 p.m.
The early afternoon crashes caused a major delay for southbound drivers.
The on-ramp to Route 24 South on County Street was closed while police, ambulance and tow-truck drivers dealt with the crashes.
