A Wisconsin man was critically injured Tuesday when his car crashed into the back of a street sweeper cleaning the roadway on Route 12 in Volo, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement released early Wednesday, sheriff’s officials reported that deputies responded to a call around 2:30 p.m. about a crash with injuries on Route 12 just south of Brandenburg Road, which is east of the Volo Bog.
The statement added that deputies arrived and located two vehicles “with major damage.” A preliminary investigation shows a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo driven by a 59-year-old man from Silver Lake was traveling southbound on Route 12 in the inside lane, according to the statement, while a Freightliner street sweeper also operated in the southbound inside lane.
“The driver of the street sweeper was driving at a reduced speed, as he was conducting cleaning operations of the roadway,” the statement added. “For an unknown reason, the driver of the Chevrolet drove directly into the rear of the street sweeper.”
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the Chevrolet was critically injured in the crash and transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the street sweeper, a 43-year-old man from Elk Grove Village, was reported to be uninjured.
