Bellingham, WA : Deadly motorcycle accident on April, Monday 17th 2017

A teenager died while testing out a motorcycle for the first time Monday afternoon in his neighborhood just west of Ferndale, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Peter Shulga, 18, had been riding the Honda CBR 600 for about 30 minutes when he lost control in a curve at 3:30 p.m. and crashed south of Jessie Court, said Trooper Travis Shearer.

The motorcycle and rider went over a curb, through a small sapling, and into a light pole on the west side of Monument Lane in The Meadows, a new housing development of more than 150 homes under construction.

Shulga, a high school senior, died at the scene, Shearer said. The black-and-red sport bike came to rest by a stump, in a shallow pond near Josie Lane.

Shulga lived about 1 ½ blocks from the crash. His family arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.

State troopers believe it was Shulga’s first time riding the Honda CBR. He did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his license. Troopers said Shulga wore a helmet, but they’re investigating whether it fit him properly, and whether it was latched.

The speed of the crash remains under investigation, too. An autopsy will be performed by the county medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

The Meadows housing development is west of Horizon Middle School, by the northwestern corner of Ferndale city limits.
