Newport News,VI : 2 people dead following crash at Power Plant Parkway in Hampton on July, Friday 28th 2017
Two people died in a crash off Power Plant Parkway, according to police.
The crash happened about 2:10 p.m. Friday after a Hampton police officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a white sedan for a "traffic infraction," Hampton police spokesman Matt Bond said in a news release.
The white sedan was driving in the 1300 block of West Queen Street and sped up after the officer tried to stop the car, Bond said.
The officer lost sight of the car, but saw a Ford sedan that had been involved in a crash when he turned onto Salters Creek Road, off Power Plant Parkway, Bond said.
He then saw the white sedan had also crashed in the 200 block of Salters Creek Road, Bond said.
Two people in the white sedan had life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital via Nightingale, Bond said. The passenger died on the way to the hospital, and the driver died after he arrived, Bond said.
The driver of the Ford was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said.
Hampton police are investigating the crash, and police have not yet disclosed the identity of the driver and passenger.
Mary Yeatts said she noticed the car had been driving quickly down Salter Creek Road before it crashed Friday afternoon.
She and Jeff Hunter, both employees at Hunter Mechanical, said they saw what they believed was a gun and drugs in the car after it crashed.
"He had to be running from something," Yeatts said, standing across the street.
