A spokesperson for the city of Cayce says a crash on Interstate 26 in Lexington County Monday morning was caused by a police pursuit Monday morning
Cayce Department of Public Safety officers assisted the Richland County Sheriff's Office with the pursuit, according to City of Cayce spokesperson Ashley Hunter. At one point, the vehicle police were pursuing was going east in the westbound lanes of I-26. After causing the crash at exit 114, the driver proceeded to the 12th Street Extension exit and eventually into the City of Columbia.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department says they were notified of a stolen vehicle from Mendoza Lawn Car on Bluff Road.They pursued the vehicle until they lost sight of it. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Huger and Blossom Street. "It's kind of sad," said Margarito Mendoza of Mendoza Lawn Care. "You have, what, 6-7 police and you let him go."Deputies identify the suspect as a white male between 20 and 30 years old, approximately 6'3" and weighing between 155 to 175 pounds. WIS has been told the pursuit involved a crash involving a police vehicle on Jarvis Klapman Boulevard. Throughout the chase, investigators say seven vehicles were damaged.
Lexington County dispatch confirms some injuries in the crash. Three vehicles were involved.
"Damaged the truck in the front, the trailer in the back," Mendoza said . "Something simple. I feel more bad about the people that got hurt in the road where the accident happened."
