PHOENIX, AZ : Woman dead, 1 critical after crash with light rail near downtown Phoenix on Saturday, 24th February 2024

A 76-year-old woman died, and her passenger is critical after their vehicle crashed with the light rail near downtown Phoenix.

Emergency crews were called around 11:30 p.m. Saturday to an area near 21st and Washington streets, where they found the collision. Both women were taken to a hospital, where the driver, identified as Sandra Barbre, later died. Her passenger is still in the hospital in critical condition.

Police say Barbre’s vehicle drove in front of the light rail but couldn’t say for sure if she was turning from Washington Street or exiting Interstate 10. Police say the light rail had the right of way.
