Newton,WI : 3 dead after head-on crash on Interstate 43 in Manitowoc County on January, Thursday 25th 2018

Three are dead after a head-on crash between two vehicles on Interstate 43 near County Road C in Manitowoc County Thursday afternoon.

A press release from Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office said two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene while the third was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.


Police and emergency personnel responded to the crash at 3:36 p.m. Thursday. According to the press release, a 40-year-old man from Whitelaw was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and headed southbound on I-43. The truck crossed the median and collided with a 2001 Ford Windstar van driven by a 62-year-old man from Manitowoc who was traveling with a 33-year-old woman. A small fire ignited in the engine compartment of the pick-up truck but was quickly extinguished and was not a factor in the injuries, the release said.

All three individuals were trapped and had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life. The interstate was reopened at approximately 7:45 p.m. after being closed at 3:40 p.m.

The names of the victims will be released by the Manitowoc County Coroner's Office after family have been notified, the press release said.

The Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Newton Fire Department, Newton First Responders, Valders Ambulance, Manitowoc Fire and Rescue, Manitowoc County Highway Department, Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
