Charlotte, North Carolina
A driver is charged and a passenger is dead following a single-vehicle crash in Charlotte's University City area Monday night.
Luke Warren, 20, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle in the crash that left 23-year-old Matthew Paul Nemeth dead, officials say.
Warren was driving a 2010 Hyundai Genesis on west WT Harris around 9:17 p.m. when he accelerated and began to fishtail. He over-corrected and slid off the side of the road, striking a guardrail, police say.
Nemeth was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he later died. Warren was taken to CMC with minor injuries.
Police say Nemeth and Warren were wearing seat belts.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but heavy rain and speed do, officials say.
