A Dobson police officer was killed in an off-duty crash Thursday night on Interstate 77.Officer Alexander "Dave" Wilmoth, 23, died at the scene of the crash just before 11 p.m. on the southbound side between mile marker 97 and 98. Wilmoth is the nephew of Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson.
Wilmoth was driving his personal Toyota pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle, investigators said. The truck went into the median, crossed back over both southbound lanes, went over a guardrail, overturned several times and hit a tree, investigators said.
Wilmoth worked at the Surry County Sheriff's Office from June 2014 to July 2015. He joined Dobson police in August 2015.
Dobson police Chief Shawn Myers said the following in a statement
"Wilmoth was an officer that was willing to help any citizen that he comes into contact with. Officer Wilmoth was an outstanding officer and will be greatly missed within the Dobson Police Department and the Town of Dobson."
Atkinson said the following in a statement:
"During his time as a law enforcement Officer Wilmoth distinguished himself as a true public servant, always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. He loved his job and took seriously his responsibility. He had a natural ability to deal with people in difficult situations and he matured quickly as an officer.”
Visitation will take place from 5-9 p.m. Saturday at the Dobson First Baptist Church at 204 S. Crutchfield St. in Dobson. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dobson First Baptist.
Shuttle service will be available from Dobson Elementary School and the Moody Funeral Home, both on West Atkins Street.
