Canton, OH : Man dead after crash closes I-77 N exit ramp at Faircrest on Monday, July 11, 2016

An 82-year-old man is dead and a woman injured following a multi-vehicle crash Monday at Faircrest Street SW and the Interstate-77.

The driver of a white Mercury Grand Marquis, Eugene C. Greathouse, of Warren, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:20 p.m., according to Harry Campbell, an investigator with the Stark County Coroner's office. A female passenger was taken to Aultman Hospital after being pulled from the wreckage by rescue crews.
The crash occurred at 11:41 a.m.

According to police and a witness at the scene, the Grand Marquis was northbound on I-77 and came down the exit ramp when it struck a blue Dodge Dakota pickup at the ramp's intersection with Faircrest Street. The Grand Marquis continued on before landing an estimated 200 feet away in a McDonald's parking lot, winding up on its roof.

"Didn't even slow down at all; she was airborne for a while," said Sapin Williams, a truck driver from Greensboro, N.C., who said he had just pulled his truck into the same lot for a lunch break.

Canton police are handling the investigation. Police said the Grand Marquis failed to stop at the traffic signal at Faircrest. After striking the Dakota, the vehicle went across a grassy hill and hit a light standard before landing. The Dakota then struck a third vehicle, a stopped semi-tractor, police said.

The I-77 northbound exit ramp to Faircrest was temporarily closed due to the crash.

A small, multi-colored pet bird that had been in the car survived and was found outside the vehicle, Campbell said. The Stark County Humane Society responded to the scene and took the bird to its facility for safe keeping until a family member could retrieve it.
