A 16-year-old Lincoln North Star High School student was killed and six people injured in a five-car crash on North 84th Street on Wednesday morning.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews responding shortly after 10 a.m. pulled several people from their cars and took six people to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Battalion Chief Leo Benes said.

North Star officials on Wednesday afternoon identified the student killed as junior Blayne Rezac in a message to parents.

The message said a fellow North Star student, who like Rezac attended the Career Academy, was injured in the crash. That student wasn't identified.

Lincoln Public Schools officials said crisis team members would be available to meet with students at North Star and at the Career Academy on Thursday.

Accident reports had not been completed as of Wednesday afternoon, so details on how the accident happened weren't available, Lincoln Police Officer Angela Sands said.

But it appears the accident happened around the time Career Academy students would have been returning to their high schools.

The Career Academy is at Southeast Community College, near 84th and O streets. North Star High School is near 33rd Street and Folkways Boulevard.

LPS provides buses to the Career Academy from students’ home high schools but they aren't mandatory for students. Officials say they recommend students take the bus but it isn’t required because of the variety of academic, extracurricular and family situations.

According to the Career Academy website, juniors attend the academy from 8:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

In the aftermath of the accident Wednesday, a silver minivan and two red vehicles were clustered in the southbound lanes on 84th Street as a black minivan sat about 20 yards away off the west shoulder.

The collision was just south of the 84th Street entrance to the Lancaster Event Center and near the David Murdock Trail bridge.
