Lincoln, NE : Woman hurt in crash on Sunday, January, 29th 2018
“Hi, Sweetheart, it’s Mom.”
Gina Christensen bends over the hospital bed, stroking her daughter’s forehead.
Shania Smolik plants a kiss on her big sister’s arm.
“Hey, Megan,” she says. “We’re here.”
A week after the accident, Megan Smolik is still asleep. The 21-year-old was driving her Kia Optima on icy Havelock Avenue on Jan. 22, when she turned into the path of a northbound semi on 84th Street.
A good Samaritan called 911 and gave her CPR until help arrived.
The passenger-side impact to her car broke Smolik's collarbone and bruised her lungs. A traumatic brain injury left her in critical condition at Bryan West Campus, sedated and on a ventilator.
"She started breathing on her own Friday night," her mom said Monday morning.
And now they wait.
