LAPEER TWP, MI : Multiple semis crash, close I-69 on Monday, 28th January 2019
Lt. Jerry Carter, commander of the Michigan State Police Post in Lapeer, almost became part of one of those dashcam videos that play endlessly on YouTube.
Carter was out on I-69 Monday (Jan. 28) afternoon “being an extra set of eyes,” when he found himself in the midst of an unfolding multi-vehicle crash on the expressway’s westbound lanes at Morris Road.
Carter said a Trooper had stopped for a vehicle in the ditch near the overpass around 4 p.m. He said about six semi-tractor trailer rigs were damaged and another six or eight “peeled off the road” to avoid hitting other vehicles, including one that narrowly missed his Chevrolet Impala patrol car.
Carter said the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept., Lapeer Township Police Dept. and Lapeer Fire & Rescue did a “fantastic job helping out.” Traffic was diverted off I-69 at Wilder Road and detoured through Lapeer until nearly 6 p.m.
He said wreckers were able to clear the highway a lot faster than he expected.
Carter said the Trooper assigned to the incident is still sorting things out, but he believes semis driving too fast for conditions was the cause of the crash.
