Jacksonville, FL : Mother, adult son killed in Lakeshore crash on Tuesday night, October 18, 2016
Loved ones and neighbors are still in disbelief after police said a mother and her adult son were killed Tuesday night in a crash in the Lakeshore neighborhood.
Alice Stockdale, 68, was driving west on Birkenhead Road, just off Roosevelt Boulevard, about 10 p.m. when they were struck by a car at the intersection of Hamilton Street, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. She and her passenger, Branden Stockdale, 36, were killed on impact, police said.
The driver of the other car, Levon Jones,19, was taken to Orange Park Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. His mother told News4Jax that their family is heartbroken for everyone involved.
Investigators said it's unclear what caused the crash, but speed could be a factor.
"The only thing I can say about Hamilton Street is that this stretch of it is long, and so it is a possibility that someone could build up some speed or something like that," an officer told News4Jax at the scene.
Neighbors and friends said they're shocked a deadly crash could happen in the residential area where a speed limit signs marked 30 mph are posted.
A woman, who was friends with Alice Stockdale, came to the scene of the crash the day after to try to process how it could have happened.
"I wanted to come just to see how bad it looked and how it could have happened. I just can't imagine her and her son being killed in an instant like that," she said. "Just to kill two people, how could it have been so bad, you know? I see the speed sign -- 30 mph -- and someone going that speed just couldn't have taken two innocent lives."
The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said she's still in disbelief that her friend of 30 years and the little boy she watched grow up are gone.
"I will always remember how sweet and kind she was and how you just never heard anyone say anything bad about her," the friend said. "(She was) just very, very sweet."
Birkenhead Road has a stop sign at the intersection with Hamilton, but police have not said how the accident happened. Investigators said speed may have been a factor and they would be looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
