The Florida Highway Patrol has yet to publicly identify the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car while riding on North Lockwood Ridge Road near 53rd Street on the afternoon of June 19. Spokesmen said Monday that the department is trying to reach the 45-year-old's family. The driver, Dennis J. Mulshaw, 89, of Sarasota, reportedly swerved into the bike lane and knocked the rider from his bicycle at about 7 p.m., according to the FHP.

Collisions involving bicyclists have steadily increased since 2011 in both counties. Almost 600 cars collided with bicyclists in Sarasota County from 2011 to 2013, the last year for which complete data is available. In Manatee County, roughly 490 car collisions involved bicyclists during that time span.

From 2011 to 2013 — the last year finalized crash data is available from the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles — 10 cyclists died after collisions with vehicles in Sarasota County. Five bicyclists died during that three-year span in Manatee County.
