MUSCLE SHOALS, AL : One killed, one injured in Muscle Shoals wreck on Wednesday, December 7th, 2016
One person was killed and another critically injured when a small sports utility vehicle ran into the back of a truck hauling a large piece of equipment.
Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the accident happened on Alabama 184 ( Second Street) east of Muscle Shoals, just before noon Wednesday.
Troopers said Angelica Deshaun Robinson, 22, of Sheffield, died from injuries she sustained in the accident.
Reports indicated Robinson, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Helen Keller Hospital by ambulance where she died.
Troopers said Alexas Clayton, 19, of Second Street, Muscle Shoals, which is in the Nitrate City community, was the driver of the 2000 Chevrolet Tracker. Emergency personnel at the scene said she was flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital.
Authorities said it is their understanding that she underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon and was in critical condition.
The women had three dogs in the car. Although one had a scratch on its nose, the dogs were not seriously injured and were taken by officers with the Colbert County Animal Shelter.
The accident was reported to Colbert 911 at 11:49 a.m.
Reports indicate the tractor trailer truck, which was carrying a track hoe on a low-boy trailer, was traveling west and had just passed Constellium Alloys (formerly Wise Alloys) and was stopped at the railroad crossing waiting on a train.
Officials at at the scene said the bells and lights were on at the railroad crossing.
Witnesses said the SUV was traveling west and slammed into the rear of the trailer.
“When we got there, I knew it wasn’t good,” said Muscle Shoals Fire Chief Tim McMullins.
Emergency personnel at the scene said according to witnesses, the impact of the vehicle was so violent that the rear of the SUV went “10 feet” in the air upon impact.
There were no signs of skid marks at the scene. A lot of debris was knocked from the vehicle.
Officials said the impact was so severe the radiator and engine of the car were shoved into the front seat.
The accident remains under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Quad-Cities Trooper Post.
Wednesday's fatality is the second since Sunday in the Shoals and 34th this year.
