Tucson, AZ : Man dies after being hit by van near West Oklahoma Street on Tuesday night, June 7, 2016

A 39-year-old man has died after he was hit by an ice cream van while crossing the street late Tuesday night, June 7.

Basil Eleando was crossing South Sixth Avenue near West Oklahoma Street around 10:20 p.m. when he was hit by the van, which was heading north on Sixth, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Officers patrolling the area saw the incident happen.

Eleando was using crutches to cross, and was not in a crosswalk.

He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the van stayed at the scene.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
