Crown Point, IN : Illinois man killed in a one-vehicle accident in Lake County on Thursday, April 21, 2016

An Alsip, Ill., man died in a one-vehicle accident Thursday on the Indiana Toll Road in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 2:45 p.m. Dwayne Jeffries, 57, was eastbound on the Toll Road when, near the 4 mile marker, he left the roadway for unknown reasons, entered the median, traveled for approximately 450 feet, then hit an embankment causing his 2012 Chevrolet Equinox to become airborne. Jeffries’ vehicle fell approximately 30 feet and landed on its roof below the Toll Road on Calumet Ave.

Jeffries--who was pronounced dead at the scene--“may have had a medical condition prior to the crash,” police said. “An autopsy is pending.”

Calumet Ave. was closed for approximately three hours.
