Portland, OR : Man steals patrol car and crashes it in NE Portland on Friday morning, September 19, 2014
A man in NE Portland stole a police car and crashed it Friday morning, police said.
It began after police got a call that the man was near NE 137th Ave. and Sacramento St., running up and down the road screaming that somebody was following him.
They said then they got there, it turned out nobody was actually following him and it appeared he was either high or having mental-health issues.
They said more cars arrived and, during the effort to contain the man, he jumped into an unoccupied police car that was left running and drove off – nearly hitting three officers in the process.
Police said he crashed into a yard at NE 142nd Ave. and Sacramento and was taken into custody.
The 33-year-old man was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and a health assessment.
The 2009 Ford Crown Victoria was seriously damaged.
Police said the man will face several charges once he’s released from the hospital.
