Two people died Monday night and two others were flown by helicopter air ambulance to a Miami-Dade County hospital after a head-on crash at mile marker 38.8 in the Lower Keys.
U.S. 1 was closed in both directions for about two hours while Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigated the 5:20 p.m. collision.
According to FHP, Joshua Landau, 32, of Montreal, was driving his 2016 Nissan north on U.S. 1. For unknown reasons, he crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2003 GMC pickup driven by Hilda
Hernandez, 63, of Ramrod Key.
Hernandez died immediately. Her passenger, Hilda Rivero, 83, also of Ramrod Key, was taken to Fishermen’s Community Hospital, where she died.
Landau was flown to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and is in serious condition. His passenger, Randy Deskin, 30, also of Montreal, was also flown to Ryder, and is in critical condition.
Sixteen people have died on the highway in Monroe County since the beginning of the year and three since Friday.
