Columbia, SC : Victim identified in moped, tractor trailer crash on S.C. 544 on Wednesday , 7th September 2016
A man riding a moped was killed Wednesday morning after colliding with a tractor-trailer truck at the intersection of S.C. 544 and S.C. 31.
Robert Phythian, 49, of the Murrells Inlet area, died from mass blunt-force trauma at 6:37 a.m., according to Darris Fowler with the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
Phythian was traveling west on S.C. 544 and a tractor trailer was making a left turn from S.C. 544 eastbound onto S.C. 31 northbound, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Traffic was backed up in the area for hours afterward as officials with Horry County Fire Rescue and SCHP investigated the crash, and lanes on S.C. 544 were closed for part of the morning as crews worked.
The multi-disciplinary accident investigation team also was called out to determine how the crash happened.
The crash remains under investigation.
