Two teens were critically injured Saturday night after a vehicle slammed into them as they were pushing a vehicle that ran out of gas off the roadway.
Jason Newton, 14, and Frederick Horn, 17, both of Jacksonville, were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after the 11:25 p.m. crash on Blanding Boulevard at Collins Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Newton and Horn were passengers in a Ford Explorer that ran out of gas and got out to push it to the roadway’s shoulder, the Highway Patrol said. They were struck by a Chrysler Pacifica driven by Christopher Breza, 54, of Orange Park.
The crash report said one of the teens was pinned under Breza’s car, while the other was thrown off the roadway.
Breza was charged with two counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury, two counts of DUI causing property damage, one count of DUI 4th or subsequent felony, refusal to submit to a lawful blood test and careless driving.
State records show that Breza was charged in Miami in 1994 with DUI. No other DUI cases were listed in Florida and other records weren’t immediately available.
The driver of the vehicle that ran out of gas, Tierra Denise Jones-Newton, 39, and another passenger, Ashley Turenne, 21, suffered minor injuries, the report said.
