Volusia County, FL : Three adults, one child dead when car overturns in pond on I-95 in Oak Hill on Friday, July 15, 2016

Three adults and a child were killed when a car drifted off Interstate 95 Friday and overturned into a pond, troopers said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the vehicle was southbound on I-95 near mile marker 235 in Oak Hill about 8:30 a.m. when it crashed.

A witness told troopers the car was not speeding and there was no abrupt movement prior to the crash. The car slowly drifted off the road, down and embankment and into the pond, the witness said.

The car, which was completely submerged, has been recovered by a Volusia County dive team.

In a news conference, Sgt. Kim Montes with the Florida Highway Patrol said people have a few seconds to make decisions on how to survive.

"The key to getting out of a car once it is submerged is not to panic. Easier said than done, because human nature is going to make people panic," she said. "If you are wearing your seat belt, hold your position so you are not knocked unconscious. That gives you a chance to get out. With so many power windows, you have to do your best before it becomes completely submerged."

All four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said the driver was a 27-year-old woman from Illinois. The child was a 4-year-old boy, and there were two female passengers, one of whom was 67 years old, officials said.

I-95 traffic was not affected.
