Two people suffered serious injuries in a head-on crash around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 12 and Lott Road, near the Meijer entrance, in Coldwater.

Megan Bretschneider, 21, of Edwardsburg, was eastbound when she drifted across the roadway into the westbound lane of U.S. 12 and hit a car driven by Christopher Smith, 38, who was not able to avoid the head-on crash, according to Michigan State Police.

The passenger in the westbound vehicle, a 35year-old female, Jamie Smith, was pinned in the vehicle.

Coldwater Fire Department personnel had to extricate Jamie Smith from the wreckage before she could be flown to Parkview Medical Center in Ft. Wayne by Samaritan helicopter.

A second helicopter was called to the U.S. 12 landing zone. Bretschneider was flown by AirCare to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Christopher Smith was taken to the Community Health Center of Branch County by private vehicle for treatment.

The crash is under investigation by Michigan State Police. Troopers reported that “alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.”

Coldwater Police and LifeCare also assisted at the scene.

U.S. 12 was closed off for the investigation and as a landing zone for the helicopters.
