Sturgis, MI : Man's leg amputated after crash on Monday, 19th September 2016
A motorcyclist had a leg amputated after being hit by a car Monday in?Indiana.
Elkhart County Sheriff Department authorities identified the motorcyclist as David D. Butcher, 23, of Sturgis. Officials said Butcher was riding a 2007 Suzuki southbound on SR 13 around 3:30 p.m. Monday when a Honda sedan driven by a 17-year-old Middlebury driver struck him at CR 12.
Deputies said the girl was driving eastbound on C.R. 12, stopped for a stop sign and hit the motorcycle broadside as she entered the intersection.
Police said two witnesses saw the car pull into Butcher’s path.
A Memorial MedFlight helicopter airlifted Butcher to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of a severe leg injury. The teen driver did not report any injuries.
Police did not say whether any citations or charges were issued at the scene.
Butcher's mother said the family has set up a Go Fund Me page for the victim's family. Butcher has seven-month-old twins and was the sole income provider for his family.
"They need all the help and support they can get as this is a long road to recovery," his mother said.
