APOPKA, FL : Apopka teen killed in crash on Florida's Turnpike on Sunday, 18th September 2016

A 16-year-old from Apopka was killed Sunday when he was struck while standing on the shoulder of the Florida Turnpike, troopers said.The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes, near South Apopka Vineland Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Sanjay Nandram had pulled over after being involved in an earlier crash.

While on the shoulder, a driver slammed into Nandram. The driver, Tanya Garcia, told troopers that she fell asleep behind the wheel before the crash.

Nandram was a senior at Apopka High with a plan to go to college and become a registered nurse.

The crash remains under investigation.
