A Delaware man was killed in a Tuesday evening crash on Route 273, the second fatal accident to strike that highway in two days.
Investigators identified the victim as Zachary Tomczyk, a 20-year-old Wilmington, Del., resident whom Cecil County Department of Emergency Services paramedics pronounced dead at the crash scene, according to Maryland State Police.
Just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, MSP troopers assigned to the North East Barrack responded to the area of the 1000 block of Telegraph Road in Rising Sun for a two-vehicle crash.
Preliminarily, the investigation revealed that a red Jeep Patriot driven by Tomczyk – the sole occupant - was traveling eastbound on Telegraph Road while a black Ford F-150 was traveling westbound, MSP reported.
According to witnesses on scene, the driver lost control of the Jeep and went sideways into the westbound lane, where it struck the Ford.
The two occupants of the Ford were taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware to be treated for injuries suffered in the collision. As of Wednesday morning, MSP officials had not released their names.
An MSP accident reconstructionist responded to the scene for the investigation, and the State Highway Administration assisted with the road closure. A section of Telegraph Road remained closed for approximately three and a half hours during the on-scene investigation, police said, adding that it was re-opened shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Additional witnesses who may not have remained at the scene are asked to contact the Maryland State Police North East Barrack reference case 18-MSP-012074.
