Livermore, CA : Cyclist killed in hit-run-crash near Livermore on Saturday morning, December 27, 2014

Authorities say a bicyclist was hit and killed by an oncoming truck near Livermore when he swerved to avoid two fellow cyclists who crashed ahead of him.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports 40-year-old Herman Shum was riding in the middle of a pack of about 60 cyclists when two riders at the front of the group collided. California Highway Patrol investigators said he veered across the double yellow line, flipped off his bicycle and landed in the middle of the country road.

He was struck by a truck whose driver was trying to avoid the collision at the front of the pack.

Shum, a high school administrator from Dublin, was wearing a helmet. Authorities said fellow cyclists stopped to help him but his injuries were too severe.
