Providence, RI : Three people killed, 5 injured in head-on crash on Route 195 in Westport on Wednesday September 28 2016
Three people were killed in a crash on Route 195 east, between exits 10 and 11, Wednesday morning in Westport, Mass., according to the Massachusetts State Police.
A preliminary investigation shows that a westbound Dodge Caravan livery vehicle crossed the highway's median and crashed head-on with an eastbound BMW, which was traveling in the left lane, the state police said in a news release.
Two people in the livery vehicle and the lone occupant of the BMW, a 23-year-old New Bedford woman, were killed, the state police said.
Two other people in the livery vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Fall River and a male toddler from New Bedford, survived the crash and were transported to hospitals with injuries. The toddler was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the man to Rhode Island Hospital.
A third survivor in the livery vehicle also went to Rhode Island Hospital, the news release said. The police did not immediately identify the victims, or the name of the company that owns the livery, because family members had not been notified.
The livery vehicle rolled over after colliding with the BMW, the release said. The preliminary investigation shows that a Subaru Outback caught fire after the livery vehicle struck the BMW. The Subaru's driver, a 27-year-old Vermont man, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.
Two other eastbound vehicles were also hit. An Audi operated by a 34-year-old Fall River man was struck by the livery Caravan, says the news release. A Chevrolet Suburban operated by a 73-year-old Rhode Island man was also struck. The Audi's driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Charlton Hospital, the police said.
