Shelby County, TN : 14-year-old killed in ATV crash in Arlington on Monday, July 4, 2016
A teen died from injuries he sustained falling off an ATV in Arlington, according to Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened near Welbourne Cove and Summers Road in Arlington.
Deputies said the 14-year-old was driving the ATV with four other people on board. He fell off the ATV when he took a hard right turn; the ATV then turned over on top of him.
"14-year-olds think they are invincible," Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman Earle Farrell said. "They don't think anything can happen to them. You have to keep reminding them that something can happen."
Emergency crews tried to send the airwing to fly the teen to the hospital, but the airwing was unable to fly due to the stormy weather.
"We just seen everybody just scrambling trying to get back there," neighbor Angel Riendeau said.
The teen was later identified as Michael Ellis. His friend Tylin Dismuke said he saw Ellis as he and his friends drove off in the ATV.
"He was in a Polaris, kind of a side by side. they said they were going back there to ride," Dismuke said.
Ellis lives in the neighborhood by the wooded area.
It's not clear exactly why the ATV flipped over, but neighbors said the area in the woods people like to ride ATVs and bikes in can be treacherous.
"You have to go around some trees and you have to go down and up gulleys. It's trails, but its really, really steep," Riendeau said.
Ellis went to Briarcrest Christian School. Friends said he would have been in the ninth grade.
